What connection do an elephant and one of the most celebrated Hindu Gods have? This Pattachitra from Odisha by National Award-winning artist Niranjan Moharana brings it through its exquisite detailing. The painting on display portrays Kandarpa Hasti against the noir-coloured background. Seen in the context of Ras Leela (dance of love), the Kandarpa Hasti is part of Odia folklore.

This painting has a heavenly Hasti or elephant having ten gopis or devotees of Lord Krishna under a tree near a lake. They entangle themselves into the form of an elephant. On the elephant’s back, you can see Lord Krishna playing the flute. Floral patterns adorn the borders. This is a masterpiece, made by the National Award winning artist Niranjan Moharana.

Literally meaning Cloth Painting, Pattachitra is an art form from Puri in Odisha in which images of deities are painted on a piece of cloth. This practice started to give the temple deities a break after the annual ritual bath.
